Ecopell Firmengebäude

Origin

We source exclusively high-quality leather from our Allgäu leather dealer Ecopell in Weitnau.

The hides are byproducts of German agriculture – none of the cattle are kept specifically for this leather, which is important to us!

The raw hides are tanned using purely vegetable tanning (chrome-free) in a renowned tannery in Veneto according to strict guidelines. Learn more about the benefits below.

The health safety is regularly checked by independent audits.

Surface

Haptics

There are many names for our type of leather: fat leather, oil leather, saddle leather, pull-up leather, wax leather, antique and vintage leather are all common names for it.

The surface is matte and has a trendy "used look." This is achieved through a process called "nubucking," in which the surface is sanded and then treated with high-quality greases and oils.

The different areas absorb different amounts of fats and oils, creating the iridescent color effect with lighter and darker areas that makes each piece unique.

Features

Optics

Our leather is deliberately not artificially straightened, i.e. processed in such a way that the entire surface is uniformly designed through artificial embossing.

Instead, the natural features that testify to the cattle's life in the open air are preserved: fattening wrinkles, traces of insects, horns and bushes.

Our leather dealer Ecopell has created an informative page where you can read all about the natural characteristics of this vegetable-tanned leather:

Patina

Usage

This natural leather is open-pored, meaning it's not sealed with an artificial layer. This visually emphasizes its naturalness while maintaining breathability.

Liquids, skin oils, and scratches create a wonderful patina over time. Depending on personal preference and location, we recommend waterproofing and a refresher approximately once a year. Follow our care tips!

Leather Care
  • Vegetable tanning is the oldest and most environmentally friendly tanning process in the world. It has been practiced virtually unchanged for centuries.
In contrast to chrome tanning, which only takes about a day, vegetable tanning requires a great deal of patience: It takes about one to two months to go from raw material to leather hide. This makes this traditional process expensive, so today only about 10 to 15 percent of leather comes from vegetable tanning.

No two vegetable-tanned leather hides look alike. You'll receive timeless, unique pieces that will outlast any fashion trend. A leather for connoisseurs who appreciate its naturalness!

  • Vegetable tanning is based on the tanning agent tannin – a natural substance obtained from individual trees and vegetables, such as spruce and oak bark, olive leaves and rhubarb.

This natural tanning agent makes the hide as durable and resilient as we desire for our leather goods. With proper care, these can last for generations and bring happiness to many users.

The colors of the tannins give the leather distinctive, subtle shades that become even more intense over time and can be refreshed and deepened at any time with a wax-based care balm.

  • Vegetable-tanned leather does not contain harmful substances such as azo dyes, nickel, PCP, or chromium VI. Therefore, it is also suitable for most allergy sufferers.

But the environment also benefits from the use of natural tanning agents. Vegetable-tanned leather can be disposed of more easily at the end of its life: thanks to natural dyes and no artificial surface sealing, it remains biodegradable.

Important: No cattle are raised for this leather for their hides. The raw hides processed for our leather are pure byproducts of the food industry from German farms with strictly regulated husbandry practices

  • Many substances from the tanning process are reused in other areas. The animal hair removed from the raw hides, for example, is processed into natural fertilizer, and the sewage sludge is used in brick production.

Due to the verifiable origin of the raw material, the short transport routes without air or sea traffic, and the processing with tanning agents that are harmless to humans and the environment, we have no ethical concerns with this leather. This is our central criterion when it comes to the material. Processing chrome-tanned leather of dubious origin would be out of the question for us; we would cease operations before that.
